The focus of the original ESA-EEC CONTRAILS project was to develop and demonstrate an Earth Observation (EO)-based service to support the continuous assessment of the environmental effects of increasing volumes of air traffic, by monitoring the daily contrail and cirrus cloud coverage for one year over Europe and the North Atlantic. Part of the ENVISA contribution was to produce contrail maps by processing Correlated Position Report (CPR) radar data from CFMU with the Toolset for Emission Analysis (TEA) platform (i.e. AEM3, MM5 and CONTRAIL modules).
For this validation project, ENVISA and the Royal Dutch Meteorological Institute (KNMI) examined the results from the original CONTRAILS project in order to determine the extent of possible sources of error or inaccuracy in the contrail model. In addition, ENVISA incorporated a simple wind transportation model into the existing numerical contrail model.
