Market-based Impact Mitigation for the Environment – MIME

Dates: 2007 - 2010

MIME is a 3-year research project funded by the European Commission Directorate-General for Energy and Transport (DG TREN) under the 6th Framework Programme. The objective of MIME is to investigate the feasibility and potential impact of setting up a market of tradable noise permits between airlines at a given airport, following the example of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme. The approach may constitute a more dynamic alternative to existing economic incentives for aircraft noise mitigation such as taxes and charges.

ENVISA is involved in all the work packages and is leading the one on Market Mechanisms. Its main activity is to:

  • derive the most adapted noise assessment methodology and metrics
  • review available market options
  • perform business cases
  • define noise permits
  • run market simulations.
