EUROCONTROL's INVENTAIR

ENVISA was mandated by EUROCONTROL to create a website dedicated to global aircraft emissions. The site will allow registered users to download and visualise worldwide emission grids based on WISDOM flight movement database.

Future Engine Technology - Environmental Impact

Dates: 2005

Through the Future Engine Technology Environmental Impact study, ENVISA investigated the potential environmental benefit of hydrogen engines compared to the evolution of technology for conventional kerosene engines.

The growing shortage of fuel supplies and the ever-increasing interest in environmental concerns are encouraging the aeronautical community to develop new types of aircraft propulsion. Among the different modes of propulsion studied, hydrogen seems to be the most promising for the next decades. Apart from helping to overcome the fuel supply problem, hydrogen engines offer the great advantage of creating only water vapour and NOx exhaust.

ENVISA compared the environmental impacts of two scenarios:

  • no aircraft is converted to hydrogen, i.e. a reduction of emission is obtained only through technological improvement of today's kerosene engines
  • the entire fleet is converted to hydrogen.
