Impact of Departure Procedures on Local Air Quality

Dates: 2007 - 2008

ENVISA was mandated by the UK National Air Traffic Services (NATS) to assess the impact of new aircraft departure procedures on local air quality in Southeast England. An air quality study at a major airport in the area was carried out, based on the 2006 traffic. Concentration contours were produced and compared between current and future procedures. In addition, concentrations at specific receptor locations corresponding to sensitive areas were calculated.

ENVISA's main tasks were to:

  • collect and process aircraft and radar data (list of movements, vertical profiles and horizontal tracks, etc.)
  • study and define scenarios
  • collect and analyse meteorological data at the airport site for the year 2006
  • collect and analyse meteorological data for Southeast England over the last 20 years
  • model two airports in LASPORT and ALAQS-AV
  • analyse the modelling results
  • compare model outputs with monitored values.
