Because of the complexity of calculating noise contours around airports, many of the existing noise models are based on simplified methodologies. In particular, flight operations are generally defined in a generic way, which does not always reflect the actual operational practices at a given airport. Furthermore, these empirical and generic data make it difficult to validate the noise models themselves against measured noise values.
EUROCONTROL Experimental Centre’s ENHANCE tool enables more accurate aircraft noise assessments by processing real-life fleet mixes with associated 4-D radar or simulated flight trajectories and feeding them into existing noise models, such as the FAA’s Integrated Noise Model (INM). It features its own flexible aircraft performance module based on the latest ECAC-ANCAT or SAE 21 recommendations and Aircraft Noise & Performance (ANP) data.
